OPEN TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-COLLEGE
TUITION, AUDITIONS CASTING, REHEARSALS, & PERFORMANCES
TRYPS believes in our young performers. Joining the cast of a show is a big commitment - time, effort, and responsibility.
We plan 18 rehearsals to get the show practiced and perfected.
When an actor misses one rehearsal, it takes three rehearsals to get that actor up-to-speed.
Help us, help your child, help the show by:
• Making a commitment to be at all the rehearsals and performances.
• Making sure your child knows his/her lines,
• Making sure your child gets to rehearsals on time,
• Making sure your child keeps up with his/her script.
PRODUCER & DIRECTORS:
Jill Womack - TRYPS Executive Artistic Director, producer & director
Tammy Walker - TRYPS Artist-in-Residence and choreographer
Nollie Moore - Vocal director / Columbia College's Director of Music
Emily Rollie - PhD candidate / MU and senior TRYPS instructor & stage manager
SCROOGE will have ONE ensemble that will perform the entire script.
We cannot guarantee a role to every student who auditions, but there is opportunity to learn!
Even if students are not cast in the full-production ensemble, there are two other options:
(If you are not cast and take a class instead the fee is at the Pre-Sept 4 price)
• The PETER PAN REVIEW cast on Saturday afternoons.
• TRYPS will offer a PETER PAN REVIEW show that will rehearse on Saturday afternoons and will have two performances in the TRYPS Little Theatre at Columbia Mall. It will be highlights of music from the play. The Review Class meets from 1-3PM beginning September 12th. LINK
• The SCENE STUDY CLASSES meeting on Saturday mornings.
• TRYPS will offer two scene study classes to teach students about script analysis, character choices, rehearsal techniques. The class for students in grades 4-7 is under the direction of senior TRYPS teacher Afton Thomas. The class for students in grades 7-10 is under the direction of EEE's Dr. Prater. Both classes meet on Saturdays beginning September 12th from 10:45A-12:15P at TRYPS Columbia Mall.
To best prepare for auditions:
• YouTube, rent or purchase the Albert Finney version of SCROOGE, a musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol. There are 30 speaking roles of varying sizes. The music and dancing is off the map!
• Come to the audition workshop. You will learn the music, the choreography, and read all of the audition scenes aloud with the creative team.
• Practice what you learn at the audition workshop - read the scenes aloud, sing the music, get on your feet to practice the choreography. Practice the scenes with full emotion, bold stage voice - practice will help you give a strong audition!
• Please be sure to mark ALL conflicts on the calendar due at the audition workshop.
• Attending rehearsals is not optional. Actors are making a commitment to be at all rehearsals.
• We will work around conflicts disclosed on the conflict calendar.
• HOWEVER – THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO READ – If you miss a rehearsal that was not included on your original conflict calendar OR if you leave a rehearsal early OR if you arrive late to a rehearsal, WE WILL NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL INCLUDED IN THE MUSICAL NUMBER REHEARSED THAT DAY.
•We will not change casts, performances, rehearsals after the cast list is posted.
•If your child will not accept any role offered - mark that on the rehearsal calendar due at audition workshop or reconsider auditioning.
• If a student drops out of a show after the cast list is posted FOR ANY REASON, he or she will be precluded from auditioning for the following TRYPS production.

We know you’re busy! But make the time to read this information!!
It’s the fine print for being involved in a show!
AUDITION PAPERWORK - We will not cast anyone without completed paperwork!
All paperwork is due at the Mandatory Free Audition Workshop at TRYPS Columbia Mall on Saturday, August 29th from 1-4PM.
Students will stay at TRYPS during the entire audition workshop.
Parents – love you, but you’ve got to kiss and fly, unload ‘em and leave ‘em!
•PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION – LINK

We must know if you need financial assistance prior to auditions.
•PARENT/GUARDIAN PERMISSION SLIP LINK
This form is your official agreement to participate in the TRYPS production class.
•RESUME FORM LINK
Students learn that filling out a resume is a part of their working life. It also helps them have a
resume form on-hand for auditions with other companies and movies that come to film in Missouri.
• CALENDAR - REHEARSALS/PERFORMANCE/CONFLICTS LINK
Please mark all dates that your child has pre-existing conflicts.
If your child must miss more than two rehearsals, please reconsider auditioning for the play.

AUDITION WORKSHOP – Saturday, August 29
Location: TRYPS at Columbia Mall
Time: 1-4PM
• Students must turn in audition paperwork at this time: resume, permission, conflict calendar, and - if needed – the partial scholarship application.
• Students will be split into three groups to learn audition music and choreography, perform the scenes out loud, learn how to practice the material before the auditions, and what the creative team is looking for with the characters.
• Students will remain with us the entire time.
• We love you parents, but the kids really do so much better without you. Kiss & fly!!
• Attending rehearsals is not optional. Actors are making a commitment to be at all rehearsals.
•If your child will not accept any role offered - mark that on the rehearsal calendar due at audition workshop or reconsider auditioning.
HOW DO I GET A LEADING ROLE?
• If there is a movie based on the play – watch it. (YouTube, purchase or rent.)
• If there is a book based on the play– read it.
• If there is a soundtrack – listen to it, take out the lyrics and sing along with it. (iTunes)
• Practice, practice, practice - use the audition scenes and lyrics you take home from the audition workshop.
• Practice scenes and songs– out loud, with bold voices, with great character choices (goofy, mad, sweet, mean) – practice them over and over and over.
• Don’t prepare just one part – read all of them! Be ready to read as many parts as possible.
• We don’t expect anyone to memorize the audition scenes, but you must be able to read them out loud with ease. It’s the only way we can see what you would be like as the character.
• REMEMBER: Leading role equals LEADERSHIP. You must be the person who gets the job done, who leads by example, who is thoughtful – not boastful, who encourages others to stay on the ball.
AUDITIONS –
Tuesday, September 8 for actors with last names A-L
Wednesday, September 9 for actors with last names M-Z
Location: TRYPS at Columbia Mall
Time: 6-8:30PM
• Students will remain with us the entire time.
• Students are asked to read many different roles. Nothing is required to be memorized.
• Students are asked to sing in groups and individually at this time.
• We encourage students to ask to read for any part they are interested in – time permitting. If a child is not able to read for a role – it is most likely because they are not the right height for a role, were not able to compete with other children in the demands of the role (i.e. singing a solo), or we have seen them read a role they are dynamite for already .
• Families can go to the TRYPS web site (http://tryps.missouri.org) to see if children are needed for callbacks on Thursday evening. The list will be posted by noon on Friday, September 11th.
CALLBACKS – Thursday, September 10th
Location: TRYPS at Columbia Mall
Time: 6-8:30PM
• Students will remain with us the entire time.
• Callbacks are our opportunity to read combinations of students who excelled in each part during the workshop and auditions.
• Callbacks are similar to a final employment interview. We look at combinations of kids, create the final look and interpretation of a show, and give young actors a final try for roles.
• It’s a final opportunity for us to see the chemistry between actors, offer direction, and see what different combinations offer for the strength of the show.
CASTING – Cast list posted on Friday, September 11th by noon.
• TRYPS endeavors to create a performance opportunity for each child who auditions.
• We anticipate creating roles for 45 students in this cast.
• Casting is a responsibility we take very seriously; we truly try to put children in the role that will help them grow the most and make the play as strong as possible.
• So much of casting comes down to height, age, chemistry between actors, and being the best person for the role. We do not have a preconceived idea of who will be cast prior to auditions.
• If your name does not appear on the cast list – students are welcome to contact TRYPS for constructive audition feedback. We encourage kids to ask. It is not a means to air grievances – but an opportunity to encourage students to improve skills for the future.
We will try our best, but cannot guarantee that roles will be available for every person who auditions.
If a child is not cast, please take a class or a theater camp with TRYPS and to keep trying!
If a student drops out of the show after a cast list is posted, he or she must sit out of auditions and casting consideration for the following production. (This includes ALADDIN, our Spring 2010 production.)

CAST LIST POSTING
A cast list for each class will be posted on the TRYPS web site by Friday, September 11th.
If your child is not listed on the cast list – he or she is welcome to ask for feedback.
We cannot guarantee that roles will be available for every child who auditions.
Please encourage children to take a class or a workshop and to keep trying!
If a student drops out of the show after a cast list is posted, he or she must sit out of the auditions and casting consideration for the following production. (This includes ALADDIN JR. – the TRYPS spring theater production.)
MANDATORY CAST & PARENT MEETING:
Saturday, September 12 from 1:00-1:30P (new parents will stay an additional 15 mins)
Students will remain after each parent/cast meeting for their first rehearsal.
Please attend - EVEN IF YOU HAVE DONE A TRYPS SHOW IN THE PAST.
Schedule changes often occur at this meeting.
We also check all contact information & hand out rehearsal packets.
You must sign up for a volunteer 10 hours in costumes, props, set building, set painting, or marketing. It is required of all our families.
Tuition is also due at this time, as are orders for extra t-shirts, DVDs, and the show poster.
WHY DO YOU HAVE TO VOLUNTEER? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
• Shows take 100 hours of preparation for every minute of performance. It takes many hands to make light work of it. Make time to help us! We need you!!
• TRYPS has made it mandatory for each family participating in our plays to volunteer ten hours of time.
What can you do? Help paint the set, sew costumes, cut flyers, put up posters, help with special
events to promote the show, help with props, or help with the post-show clean-up of re-stocking
costumes/props or laundering costumes.
• We have a mandatory policy of families participating in either the load in (putting the set in the theater)
or strike (taking the set out of the theater).
• LOAD IN & STRIKE – We will keep a sign in/sign out sheet for volunteers.
Load In – We load the set, costumes, props in a U-Haul, take it to the theater, set it up. Some pieces
are very heavy and some are light. It takes 1-2 hours to load and unload the truck, and 4-6 hours to
assemble the set, set up the box office, put the stage extension in place, and get ready for tech.
Strike – We have to take the set apart, sort costumes and props, scrub the theater and bathrooms,
vacuum, sweep, load everything back in the truck, take it to the office and put it away.
• TRYPS is keeping a Load In/Strike sign in and sign out sheet. We will only email the cast party information to families on these sheets. We hate to hold the cast party ransom – but it has become our only option in making sure we have enough help to accomplish a safe and timely load and strike.
• We ask every family - parent and child together - to volunteer 10 hours of work: costumes, sets, props, and marketing. Ten hours spread over four months; please make time to lend a hand.
• ABOVE & BEYOND: Ushers, box office volunteers, and Stars & Roses volunteers sign up for specific performances and receive a free ticket for that public performance. You MUST sign-up for these slots. Volunteers cannot show up to help without prior training and instruction. Ushers, box office volunteers, and Stars & Roses volunteers will receive a free ticket to the performance they assist.
