Theater!

DearFriends, Educators, and Parents,
I love children's theater. It's a magical place. Tucked in the audience, I am transported to places I've never seen before, meet people I've never heard of before, see things I've never even imagined...whisked over the rainbow, lost in the Hundred Acre Wood, flown to Never Land, thrown into a mad tea party, renewed in a secret garden, hidden in an attic room with a girl and her diary. Which of these places fails to ring deeply in your imagination?
Works of art are powerful tools. They teach us, reach our conscience and sense of humanity in a deep and lasting way, and inspire us to move forward. Onstage, these magical places and people come to life. And cloaked inside the music, humor, and adventure - we discover ourselves. We learn that there is no place like home or that we must grow up or that we're free to be you and me, or we dare to hope that, despite everything, people really are good. That's the powerful nature of art at work.
We learn. We are touched. We are connected by this shared experience, and a common bond is born between audience and actors. Together, we remember our finest qualities: hope, courage, creativity, honesty, tolerance, and on and on and on. All of this is possible from a simple trip to see a play.
At TRYPS, we create magic. We do it expressly to teach, reach, and inspire young audiences - not only about theater, but about life's values. We tie classroom lessons to life lessons. We love it and hope you will too.

TODDLERS & UP
LIVE AT ELEVEN – The first Saturday of every month, TRYPS offers a free workshop for toddlers to tweens at the Columbia Public Library. We sing! We dance! We read and act out stories! We play games!
BACKSTAGE TOURS – After our Saturday matinee performances, youngsters can enjoy a free backstage tour – get to finger costumes, move scenery, learn theater terms, and share the backstage magic.

PRE-SCHOOLERS
CREATIVE DRAMA CLASSES - TRYPS offers classes for 3- and 4-year-olds on Saturday mornings and after school from 4:30-5:30 PM. These are creative drama classes. We use simple stories – like “Green Eggs & Ham” – to start off our acting career. We learn to use a bold stage voice and follow directions. We also learn a song and dance number to perform for families on the last day of class.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN (K-5)
PLAY DAYS – When the Columbia Public Schools are closed for teacher workdays or conferences or a few national holidays, TRYPS holds an all-day theater workshop for children in elementary school. We act, sing, dance, play theater games, draw – and perform at pick up time for our families!
CLASSES – We offer a variety of theater classes for elementary school kids – acting and even Shakespeare and musical theater. The classes are both Saturday mornings and after school in the Fall and Spring.
DAY CAMP – We offer a week-long day camp for students in Grades K-9. The students spend the day going to four different classes: acting, musical theater, improvisation, acting for the camera, stage combat, and/or crafts. We spend the week putting together a special performance for families and friends on the last afternoon of camp.
REEL KIDS CAMP – TRYPS offers an evening workshop for students in Grades K-7 to write and act in their own short film. As part of the RagTag True/False Festival, students often meet filmmakers and have a Q&A during their workshop experience.

STUDENTS – GRADES 2-12
PRODUCTIONS – TRYPS offers students in Grades 2-12 the opportunity to perform in four plays each year – one in the fall, one in the spring, and two in the summer. We double-cast the entire show, giving students an opportunity to land bigger roles. Students in Cast A and Cast B perform for school and public audiences. TRYPS has an “everyone in the show” policy. If young actors go through the audition process, we find a way for them to participate in the plays. We offer a class version of the shows with a shorter rehearsal and technical rehearsal schedule – giving new actors an opportunity to get involved.

STUDENTS – GRADES 7-COLLEGE
BLACK BOX PRODUCTIONS – TRYPS offers our advanced and older students an opportunity to take on challenging plays in a smaller group. They tackle period pieces, accents, and character study. Black Box shows have minimal sets; students research and provide their own costumes, and perform for school and public audiences.
INTERNSHIPS – Students can apply for several internship tracks: shadow teaching in classes and camps, technical theater (lighting, sound, set building, and/or painting), dance captains, photographers, study guide editors and authors, costumes, stage crew, or assistant directing or stage management. Students work along-side our paid, professional staff. Many students have become paid TRYPS artistic or technical staff members with their experience.
